Medical treatment guidelines are helping to reduce health costs, in certain cases.

Medical treatment guidelines can help lower the volume of medical services administered for lower back injuries. But, the same kinds of guidelines get mixed results for other kinds of injuries. A report released by the Workers Compensation Research Institute, out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, studies how medical guidelines helped employees with injuries of the neck, knee, shoulders, upper back and lower back. The report looked at how medical treatment guidelines, implemented in 2007 helped employees recover. In a report released September 5, Cambridge, Massachusetts-based WCRI studied Texas medical treatment guidelines that were implemented by Texas in 2007. The study looked at how medical guidelines in the state affected workers with injuries of the upper back, lower back, neck, knee and shoulders. Impressively, the guidelines lowered the amount of surgeries for all of the injuries in the study. Research Shows Poor Employee Health Troublesome for Companies

According to an estimate recently released by the San Francisco-based Integrated Benefits Institute, workers’ poor health and its impact on productivity costs employers in the United States $576 billion each year. The costs include money that is spent on group health policies for employees, workers’ compensation, presenteeism (when people go to work when they are sick—and are not performing at their peak), illness absence and short and long-term disability.  The Integrated Benefits Institute says its researchers found that $229 billion (or 39 percent of the total), results from lost productivity that is tied to poor health and drives both presenteeism and work absences. In addition, wage replacement makes up $117 billion of the total. This number includes costs that are incurred under short-term and long-term disability programs and workers’ comp. Iowa case shows why your company should follow its own procedures.

A recent decision by the Iowa Court of Appeals upheld a lower court decision to award back pay to a worker who was inappropriately fired during the mis-application of the company’s drug testing procedures. Amanda Skipton held a inter-channel gluing operator position at J Tube Inc. The job required repetitive use of her hands, wrists and arms, according to the appellate court’s opinion. These activities lead to a diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome after Skipton reported experiencing pain in 2006. Skipton underwent treatment, but was later diagnosed with “persistent symptoms of left carpal tunnel syndrome” in 2007. This is when J Tube insisted upon a drug test, according to the company’s recently enacted drug policies. The failed drug test led to her being fired for testing positive for cocaine use. Smartphones help with Wellness Plans

According to recent research from technology and communication leaders Qualcomm Life and Virgin HealthMiles, by the end of this year, there will be more mobile devices than there are people in this world. In addition, more people will have access to mobile devices than have access to electricity, toothbrushes or even clean water.  The research shows 24 hours a day, most people are never further than three feet away from their smartphone. Thanks to this accessibility, there are innovations in wellness plan design. And according to Qualcomm Life, by 2020, about 160 million Americans are expected to be monitored and treated for medical conditions remotely. It’s expected that mobile apps will continue to emerge and be a large part of how health care is delivered in the future.
